Polynesian ancestor spirits who are revered like gods, the atua are
also known as the Nuku mai Tore, the People of the Other World .
They fly and live in trees like birds, and have no death or old age.
They are known to wander the island of Otea. A strange custom of
theirs is to deliver children by cutting the child out of the
mother's side, although when mortal men take atua wives, they
usually encourage them to have the babies the human way.
